Wizard Panel 2

Panel 2 of the wizard allows you to choose the type of publication you want to create (either standard HTML or HTML Help) and set your preferences for the table of contents (TOC) and index.

To Choose the Publication Type

Select either the Standard HTML or Microsoft HTML Help radio button at the top of the panel.

HTML Help allows you to add advanced navigational features such as an expanding/contracting table of contents and a searchable keyword index to you publications.

To use Microsoft HTML Help, you need to download the free HTML Help Workshop from Microsoft's website. Please see Creating Microsoft HTML Help Publications for details

To Specify the Heading Levels for the TOCs

You can specify which heading levels you want to appear in both the main TOC and the local TOC at the top of each page. For example, if you specify levels 1-3, then links to Heading 1, Heading 2 and Heading 3 will appear in the TOC.

If you check the Include Links to Page Titles in Main TOC box, then a link to the page title will precede the links to headings in each page. Note that if the text for the first heading is the same as the page title, the heading link will not appear in the main TOC. If you are converting Word document(s) which do not use the standard heading styles, then you should be sure to check this box if you want to create a table of contents.

To Specify TOC Options

Click the TOC Options button to display the TOC Options dialog box.

Figure 6 - The TOC Options Dialog Box

This dialog allows you to specify a number of options for the way the TOCs are formatted:

Main TOC Title is the title for the HTML page and Main TOC file name is the name of the HTML file. Display title at top of page, determines whether the title text is inserted as a heading.

Enable Collapsible TOC will create a table of contents that IE users can expand and contract.

Use Arial/Helvetica Font in TOC and Index forces these pages to use a san-serif font.

The controls in the center of the dialog box allow you to set the text formatting for the links which appear in the TOCs. You can make the text size relatively larger or smaller for each type of link. You can also make links bold or italic, and you can choose to center links to page titles if you wish.

The Display Main TOC and Index in Frame box allows you to display the main table of contents and index in a frame which is positioned at the left or top of the screen. This is very useful if you are converting a long publication (such as a manual) and you want the user to be able to easily browse through the material. Note that frames are supported only by certain browsers (as of this writing Netscape Navigator 2.0 or later, or Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 or later).

Frame Page Title is very important because this title will be displayed on the browser's caption bar at all times while the end user views your publication—the titles for individual pages will not be displayed. You should enter a title which describes your entire publication.

You can specify the orientation of the TOC/Index pane and what percentage of the screen you want it to take up. The "Home" button exits frame button causes the Home navigation button (if you choose to include one) to display your home page using the full browser window. If this option is cleared, then your home page would be displayed within the window pane.

Prefix TOC, Index and Frame file names with project name lets you insure that all files have unique names. This lets you place more than one publication in the same directory. For example, if your project name is "myproj.w2w" and you have specified the TOC page file to be called w2wtoc.htm, then with this option checked, your TOC file will be called "myproj_w2wtoc.htm".

To Create an Index

WordToWeb can automatically create an online index based on the index entries in your Word documents. If you want to create an index, check the Yes radio button. WordToWeb can also use the index entries in your Word document to generate cross-reference links between related information (see below).

If you create an index, but your Word document(s) don't have any index entries, your index will be blank. For information on how to specify Word index entries, please see your Microsoft Word documentation.

To Specify Index Options

Click the Index Options button to display the Index Options dialog box.

Figure 7 - The Index Options Dialog Box

This dialog box lets you set various options for the index and index-based cross-references:

Index Page Title is the title for the HTML page and Index file name is the name of the HTML file. Display title at top of page, determines whether the title text is inserted as a heading. If Include A->Z "Quick Jump Bar" is checked, WordToWeb will insert A to Z letters across the top of the page. The reader can click a letter to jump to the proper point within the index.

If Auto-Generate Cross-references is checked, WordToWeb will analyze the index entries on each page and create cross-reference links to pages which contain related information.

WordToWeb will create links between any two pages which share one or more identical index entries. The visible "click text" for the cross-reference links will be the title of the target HTML page.

For example, suppose that you use WordToWeb to convert your company's financial report to HTML format. One of the HTML pages created has the title "Actual Revenue by Quarter" and a second page has the title "Revenue Forecast." Now assume that each of these pages has an index entry of "Revenue." If you were to display the hidden text in the source Word document this would appear as {XE "Revenue"}.

WordToWeb would create links between these two pages which would look something like the following:

On the "Actual Revenue by Quarter" page:

On the "Revenue Forecast" page:

See Also:

Revenue Forecast

See Also:

Actual Revenue by Quarter

The cross-reference links will be placed at the bottom of the page body. If you wish you can change the Cross-reference Heading from the default of "See Also."
